Historic education agreement gives Greenlandic students access to prestigious UK scholarship programme
9.6.2026 13:34:13 CEST | British Embassy Copenhagen | Press release
From August 2026, Greenlandic students will be able to apply for the UK Government’s prestigious Chevening-scholarship, which funds one-year Master’s degrees and provides access to a global network of current and future leaders.

Greenlandic students will now have the opportunity to undertake a fully funded one-year Master’s degree at some of the world’s leading universities in the United Kingdom, including the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, the University of Edinburgh and the London School of Economics.
For students with an interest in natural resources and mining, Camborne School of Mines (CSM) at the University of Exeter may be a particularly attractive option, given its specialisation in geology, minerals and resource extraction.
“We are proud to strengthen the ties between the United Kingdom and Greenland through education. This is only the beginning, and we look forward to developing even more opportunities for collaboration,” said the British Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark, Victoria Billing.
The agreement, concluded between Greenland’s Minister for Education, Culture, Sports and Church, Nivi Olsen, and the British Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark, gives Greenlandic students holding at least a bachelor’s degree access to the UK’s Chevening programme.
“This is a historic opportunity for Greenlandic students. British universities are among the best in the world, and with Chevening scholarships our young people can study at the highest international level. Greenland needs strong, internationally educated talent, and this partnership is an important step towards the Greenland of the future,” Minister Nivi Olsen said.
Access to world-class education and global networks
Chevening is the UK Government’s international scholarship scheme, offering the opportunity to complete a one-year Master’s degree at a wide range of UK universities while building international connections through a strong global network.
Today, the network includes former and current heads of state and government, ministers, business leaders and international decision-makers from around the world.
The UK Government is also committed to strengthening ties between people, institutions and businesses in the United Kingdom and Greenland. In particular, the programme aims to:
- empower emerging Greenlandic talent by providing access to high-quality, English-language Master’s-level education in the UK.
- foster long-term relationships and greater mutual understanding between the peoples of the UK and Greenland through a network of current and alumni scholars.
- contribute to higher levels of educational attainment in Greenland and, in turn, a stronger international presence of Greenlandic students.
The scholarships are fully funded and cover - subject to the programme’s terms and conditions - tuition fees, living expenses, and travel to and from the United Kingdom. Scholars may also be accompanied by their families.
New partnership to strengthen talent development and the mining sector in Greenland
The ‘Chevening Greenland Amaroq’ scholarships have been established in partnership between the Government of Greenland, the United Kingdom and the British mining company Amaroq as a funding partner.
Amaroq is an independent mining company focused on unlocking Greenland’s mineral potential.
The Company has a portfolio of gold and strategic mineral assets in Greenland, including the operating Nalunaq Gold mine and exploration targets with a focus on gold and strategic metals & minerals such as copper, zinc, rare earths, germanium and gallium.
“We are committed to building strong local talent to support the growth of Greenland’s mining sector,” commented Eldur Olafsson, CEO of Amaroq. “We look forward to partnering with the Chevening programme to develop the next generation of mining professionals in Greenland.”
The agreement marks a new step in cooperation between the United Kingdom and Greenland, with a focus on strengthening educational opportunities and international competencies. From the UK’s perspective, the partnership is seen as an investment in future generations and in strengthening ties across the Kingdom of Denmark.
Applications for the Chevening programme will open in August.
The Chevening programme is globally focused on strengthening skills and international links in countries outside the UK and is primarily used in countries where there is a need to build international capacity and leadership expertise.
